Dedicated to Pat, who sadly left us while we were away researching for this article. Drawn by no more than an old photograph that was presented in the November edition of The Raligram trade magazine, Volume 2, Number 6—we have a 50 year old mystery! Among the bikes on display, this picture showed what appears to be a Phillips Gadabout P 50 with three-speed Rex engine. A casual glance at the image might arouse little attention from anyone unfamiliar with the Gadabout models, but this bike is like no other ever seen or previously known by anyone in Britain, since it features a sprung frame with swing-arm rear suspension, while the production P 50 Gadabout had a rigid frame!

In July , the original two-speed Rex engine in the P 39 was succeeded by a two-speed Villiers 3K motor, and introduced as the new P 45 model. For a number of years it had been believed the picture in The Raligram illustrated a prototype model that was taken to show at Wellington in New Zealand, ahead of presentation at the expected Earls Court Show in November As it happened, there was no motor cycle show at Earls Court in , and neither was there any Springer Gadabout announced.

What became of the machine, no one knew.

Her creativity is awesome and because of it a few unexpected adventures came on her path. That NZ was definitely the most challenging thing I have ever done, and what a feeling when I actually completed it with just a few hours to spare! Building a rocket, heart surgery, underwater hockey — bring it on. That said, the Africa cycle tour was the adventure that really changed my life — I went from being quite an ambitious but very insecure year-old to being a much more self-assured sort of person with a lot of faith in people and the world.

Pretty much! I loved cycling as a sport and travelling, but had never even heard of cycle-touring until shortly before that trip. I often say that adventure is an attitude, and every day I learn that a little bit more. I wish I could say that I did, but actually my parents were going to go cycle-touring just the two of them and my sister and I had to convince them to invite us along! Lots and lots and lots of rough days on adventures.

And in Wales — a week of pretty much nonstop rain, putting up a wet tent every night, crawling into a wet sleeping bag, the lovely smell of damp just everywhere. And Africa — Malaria, heatstroke, elephants. Cycling through the elephant zones were probably the toughest out of all of those, because we had a really scary encounter with an elephant and after that I developed such a bad phobia that I would hyperventilate for literally the whole day of riding through the wildlife parks.

Uncertainty is pretty much my default state of being. With most things — in life and adventure — I just close my eyes and hope that I make it out alive.

After a false start in which several riders went down, the race proceeded without a mis hap, Phillips finishing the 40 laps in 23 minutes Simes, who has won every national championship event from midget to senior, turned professional last year and is now racing in Europe. He won the midget championship ages 8 to 12 in , and was twice best all round rider. Strategy was the key to the men’s match race final as the riders stopped for several min utes in a battle of nerves, thighs bulging as they tensely bal anced their bikes in an attempt to force the other rider to take, the lead, and the additional burden of cutting through the air.

An all-around bike mechanic should be up to speed on these bikes. Glider; Hercules; Huffy; Humber; New Hudson; Norman; Phillips; Robin Hood; Royal Scot This is the easiest way to date a 3-speed bicycle, if it has its original rear wheel.

This bike was supposedly made by Phillips for the American market. Some of the not so obvious hints that this is Phillips are found in some of the little details. Like the Phillips Dimples on the fork. Those are a very specific design aspect of Phillips bicycles. Like the Front and rear lugs. Though astute readers will notice something a little unusual about the second photo. The AG is basically the standard AW hub, but with a dyno in it. The dyno produces electricity for the lighting system.

And even if it was hook up there is a good chance the bulbs are burned out. All Sturmey Archer hubs until fairly recently have a date of manufacture stamped on them. Here you will see the numbers 60 and 6 stamped under the S-A logo. A quick look at the cockpit. There should be a small piece that covers the gap in the lower left part of the first picture.
